Public Engagement
Education and Public Engagement (EPE) is a strategic priority for Insight, underpinned by a commitment to inform and enthuse all sectors of the public about data science and its value to society. Our work includes collaboration with community groups on the development of research projects, engaging students and youth groups of all ages in the university setting to undertake stimulating STEM activities, and visiting schools all over the country. We have been involved in the development of the IT curriculum in Irish schools, advocating for the inclusion of computer coding as a key skill for students to develop. Insight offers a programme for third-level undergraduate students to de-mystify research, providing volunteering opportunities and demonstrating the wide range of career options available for researchers. A strong culture of engagement continues to flourish across all Insight at all levels.

Citizen Science
In 2019, Insight put out a competitive call to its researchers for proposals for a Citizen Science research project. The winning entry was Crowd4Access – the identification of accessible urban areas for people with reduced mobility through crowdsourced mapping and data science. Visit Spotlight on Research for a Q&A with project lead Bianca Pereira and project updates.
