Dr John Breslin is a Senior Lecturer (tenured academic) at NUI Galway's College of Engineering and Informatics (Electronic Engineering). He is also a Funded Investigator at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway (formerly DERI) and Research Leader of the Unit for Social Software there. He has been PI / budget holder for project funding totaling €1.75 million (from Enterprise Ireland, SFI, the Irish Research Council and the EU), and was co-PI on the €15 million DERI CSET Líon II project. He has written over 150 peer-reviewed publications - mainly around the applications of the Social Semantic Web to the journalism, health and fitness, government and energy domains - and is co-author of the books “Social Semantic Web Mining” (Morgan & Claypool, 2015) and "The Social Semantic Web" (Springer, 2009). As an internet entrepreneur, he is Co-Founder and Director since 2000 of boards.ie Ltd., Ireland's largest forum community with over 2.25 million visitors per month. He is also Co-Founder of Adverts Marketplace Ltd. (adverts.ie), an online classified adverts website that he set up in 2006. In 2011, he was Co-Founder with Nova Spivack and Bill McDaniel of US corporation StreamGlider Inc., a real-time streaming newsreader for tablets, which received funding from SVG Partners (John Ryan, John Hartnett, Barry O'Sullivan). He is also Founder and Editor of Technology Voice, an online publisher that covers emerging technologies and Irish startups. Since 2013, he has been a Member of the Board of Directors for the American Council on Exercise, the largest non-profit fitness certification, education and training organisation in the world. He is an Advisor to a variety of technology companies, including CrowdGather Inc., Dot-Irish LLC, Trugence Inc., BirdLeaf, BuilderEngine, Pocket Anatomy, Fimsi and AYLIEN. He is also the winner of various academic and internet awards: the ICEGOV best paper award for completed research (e-government) in 2013; the ESWC seven-year most influential paper (Semantic Web) in 2012; the IEEE PELS best paper award (electronic engineering) in 2000; two Irish Internet Association Net Visionary Awards in 2005 and 2006; and a Golden Spider Award for boards.ie in 2001. He is the creator of the SIOC project, the results of which have been implemented in hundreds of applications (by companies such as Yahoo, Boeing and Vodafone) on tens of thousands of websites. From 2013, he was Principal Investigator on the Eurapp study of EU app companies carried out with Gigaom, the final report of which was launched by European Commission VP Neelie Kroes in 2014. He has co-authored papers with industry partners such as IBM and Cisco, and his paper on SIOC has been cited in patent grants and applications by IBM and Google. He has also chaired various international conferences and workshops, including the AAAI International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media, which he brought to Dublin in 2012. He is currently Vice Chair of the International Federation for Information Processing Working Group 12.7 on Social Networking Semantics and Collective Intelligence. He is also the Dissemination Chair for the KEYSTONE European COST Action IC1302.
