Insight’s Dr Martin Serrano recently gave a presentation about the role that open source software plays in the standardisation for the Internet of Things. He was speaking at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Standardisation Sector at the Joint Coordination Activity on Internet of Things and Smart Cities and Communities (JCA-IoT and SC&C) Meeting. He addressed the need for better understanding of the OSS landscape and gave an overview of the different dimensions in OSS, for example: programming languages and data bases; operating systems and platforms; information systems and utility applications. Finally he spoke about the emerging dimension of Open Source Hardware which, Dr Serrano explained, is mainly motivated by the fast growth in Internet of Things hardware technologies.
