Insight’s long running collaboration with Samsung has allowed Samsung to leverage Insight’s deep data science and AI expertise, in particular machine learning, user modelling and recommender systems to support Samsung’s extensive AI enabled device ecosystem. The next generation of Samsung’s artificial intelligence (AI) personal assistant Bixby continues to be built with significant assistance from Insight UCD. The ultimate objective of the collaboration is to aid Samsung in creating smarter products and more personalised experiences for its customers as it competes in a hotly contested space.
Insight delivered a wealth of research expertise in a variety of diverse research strands throughout this project such as: explainability, opinion mining, group recommendations, diversity and novelty and trust in recommender systems.
The Insight research team have developed new algorithms and tools to meet AI challenges in these areas as Samsung are leading the movement away from the era of ‘search’ as people are searching less, with recommendation features filling the gap. A key output from the collaboration is an advanced, flexible, customizable recommendation framework that is easily deployed in different domains and makes explainable recommendations in different scenarios.
Samsung leveraged Insight’s recognized leadership in advanced data processing and analytics technologies, using AI across a wide range of business portfolios, such as mobile apps, mobile devices, consumer electronics, marketing, logistics, manufacturing, customer relation, ERP, and human resources to reduce latency, and ensure privacy. Over the course of this 5 year collaboration 25 researchers from Insight have contributed to a range of projects in these areas. As a result of this research collaboration Samsung has increased the number of items sold. It has allowed Samsung to sell more diverse items, increased user satisfaction and engagement, increased user fidelity, and allowed Samsung to better understand their users’ needs.
