02 May 2024, Dublin; Dr Brian MacNamee has been appointed as the new site Director of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics at University College Dublin.
Dr. Mac Namee is an Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science at UCD. Brian’s research focuses on interactive machine learning methods that place people, and their expertise, at the centre of the model training process as well as applications of machine learning in diverse fields including agriculture, space, medicine and virtual reality.
Speaking about his new role Dr MacNamee said: ‘I am very excited to take on this new role. I welcome the opportunity to continue collaborating with and supporting the amazing group of researchers working with Insight at UCD. I also look forward to collaboratively defining the research challenges in Artificial Intelligence and data science that we will address in the coming years.’
Dr MacNamee takes over from Professor Brian Caulfield.

Dr MacNamee is committed to education and the second edition of the successful textbook he co-authored, ‘Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Predictive Data Analytics: Algorithms, Worked Examples and Case Studies’, published with MIT Press and available in five languages, was released in July 2020.
Before joining UCD Brian received a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Trinity College Dublin in 2004, and after a period working in industry joined the Dublin Institute of Technology (now Technological University Dublin) School of Computing where he co-founded the Applied Intelligence Research Centre and was a founding co-principal investigator at the Enterprise Ireland CeADAR Technology Centre for applied data analytics research.
Brian is also Co-Director of the SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning, chair of the Artificial Intelligence Association of Ireland and director of training at Krisolis Ltd, an Irish data analytics training and consultancy company.
