Paul Banahan has been named the Young AI Role Model of the Year 2025 at the AI Awards, supported by Microsoft.
The awards are a celebration celebration of innovation across the Irish AI ecosystem.
Microsoft Ireland’s Catherine Doyle (pictured with Paul above) presented him with the award at an event in Dublin.
‘I am immensely proud of my central role in establishing the Mater Hospital’s Centre for AI and Digital Health,’ Paul said. ‘This initiative is key to responsibly integrating commercial AI solutions, fostering innovative research for pressing clinical challenges within the hospital, providing collaboration opportunities for PhD candidates to develop their skills in clinical AI. This recognition highlights the importance of close collaboration between research and clinical practice. Our work with generative AI for CT to MRI translation in stroke and spine imaging is focused on improving emergency triage, providing better access to critical services, and developing impactful tools for the benefit of both patients and clinical staff.
‘A massive thank you to my fantastic colleagues at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, University College Dublin, and Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics for their support over the last few years. Much of this work wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication, expertise and time! I am excited about the next phase of our research, and the opportunities that we have to bring more impactful AI solutions into clinical practice in Ireland.’
