Sorina’s research is focused on the Kidney Exchange Problem (KEP). She develops a mathematical algorithm and software to model a robust kidney exchange. A paired kidney exchange, also known as a “kidney swap” occurs when a living kidney donor is incompatible with the recipient, and so exchanges kidneys with another (patient, donor) pair. The algorithm uses Artificial Intelligence techniques to find a solution to the problem when applied in real life where uncertainty is very high. Given a KEP solution, if a pair drops out from the solution, how many transplants we can recover? Sorina’s research challenge is to study the impact when a pair pulls out from the program.
