Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term 24 month contract position as Research Fellow with the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at the National University of Ireland Galway.

The research fellow will be expected to perform a leading role in research and development in the area of data engineering, data spaces, data platforms and event processing supporting an established group of researchers and PhD students with expertise in data and knowledge engineering, data analytics and large scale data processing, as well as a long tradition of applying this expertise in various domains, including healthcare, education, sustainability, smart cities, privacy and digital humanities.

Job Description:

The successful candidates will be expected to perform a leading role in research, supervision, and research management. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Driving a dedicated research agenda on data engineering and data spaces within the Centre.
  • Developing new directions of research leading to peer-reviewed publications in top conferences and journals
  • Contributing to obtaining new research grants
  • Contributing to the management of the team and the supervision of junior researchers
  • Leading project management, reporting and team management for specific projects

Duties:

The successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Collaborate extensively with projects that pursue data engineering and data space-related research
  • Establish collaborations with industry on data engineering and data space-related projects
  • Acquire additional funding for the group and the institution
  • Contribute actively to on-going initiatives within the College of Science and Engineering
  • Participate as a member of the team in a collegial way, assisting in the definition and realisation of the scientific goals and vision of the institute.
  • Become an active member of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics.
  • Contribute to standardisation and dissemination activities
  • Support technology transfer into the community and businesses through demonstrators, international co-operations, and on-site education programmes (for companies)
  • Support the Centre leadership with administrative and institute development tasks.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in computer science or related fields
  • Proven record of accomplishment of research performance, including publications in top-ranked conferences and journals
  • Experience in managing projects and teams and demonstrated ability to work on basic and applied research problems
  • Experience in successfully preparing/writing grant proposals and participating in collaborative research projects

Desirable Requirements:

  • Expertise in the areas of data engineering and data space, including data platforms, artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs or event processing, and/or in their applications to relevant domains
  • Experience in working in a complex research environment, within small and large teams, and working with companies in relevant domains
  • Experience in implementing and demonstrating research results through highly functioning research prototypes
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation and scientific writing skills, and a sense of passion and ambition in addressing research challenges

Salary:  €56,369 to €61,423 per annum  (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from March 1st 2022
