Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Research Assistant with the Data Science Institute (DSI) at the University of Galway. This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and Industry partner(s) and is available from Jan 2023 to contract end date of 31 Dec 2023.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will look to fully utilise cloud services to allow air quality evaluation scenario modelling and to make these model forecast predictions to be made available via a cloud-enabled visualisation.

Duties:

  • Engage with CCAPs team in University of Galway to achieve research aims of the project.
  • Engage in administrative duties associated with the research programme
  • Support the development of proposals for research funding.
  • Contribute to work of Institute through activities such as student Open Days, Outreach activities & other promotion activities within the Institute/University as appropriate
  • Support the development of prototypes in order to facilitate research outputs from the project.
  • Disseminate research results and activities through technical papers, reports, tutorials and seminars where appropriate
  • Engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the Data Science Institute and the University of Galway
  • Co-supervise, mentor and support students in the University of Galway where appropriate
  • Engage in or assist with other teaching activities when appropriate

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • Masters in software engineering, data science, or the equivalent in terms of significant industry expertise.
  • Software development experience in Python, Java & JavaScript
  • Motivated and proactive attitude, willing to take ownership and initiative in all work assignments
  • Excellent analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written (English)
  • Experience applying machine learning algorithms such as Tensorflow and Scikit-learn to structured datasets.
  • Ability to identify and fulfil the academic writing requirements for target publications

Desirable Requirements:

  • Knowledge of atmospheric physics a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in developing in a cloud-based environment.
  • Experience of working in large EU/other research projects
  • Experience of website creation and maintenance, newsletters, social media dissemination techniques

Employment permit restrictions apply for this category of post

Salary: Research Assistant €28,701 to €33,394 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from January 2023
