 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics and the Data Science Institute, College  of Science and Engineering at the University of Galway.

This position is funded by Insight2 and is available from July 1st, 2024, to December 31st, 2025.

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €43,907 – €56,202 per annum, (subject to the project’s

funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.  (Research Salary Scales – University of Galway)

 Job Description:

The successful candidate will support the goal of developing seasonal influenza models using stochastic modelling approaches, and then combining these with other methods into an ensemble framework to generate weighted influenza case forecasts.

Duties:

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Lead, under  the  supervision of  the  Principal  Investigator,  the  project’s  goal  of  building ensemble model approaches to combine seasonal influenza
  • Design, build and test models stochastic models of seasonal influenza, using modern open- source computational frameworks.
  • Perform parameter  inference  on  disease  models  using  both  frequentist  and  Bayesian
  • Communicate model outputs and assumptions to public health
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Modelling, or a related
  • Demonstrated experience of infectious disease modelling using deterministic, stochastic, or agent-based
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of using inference methods to estimate disease parameters, and to generate forecasts for
  • Evidence of excellent model building skills
  • Evidence of research publication in peer-reviewed
  • Evidence of excellent communication and organizational skills

Desirable Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Skills in the following technologies and techniques: R, stan, pomp, and simulation tools such as Stella/Vensim.
  • Previous experience in working on public health projects/collaborations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage a research project including the co-supervision of
  • Demonstrate awareness of the research environment and the various grant sources and application mechanisms
