PhD Scholarships in Incentive Design for Fair Data Sharing 2023
Funding for PhD scholarships (stipend plus fees) is available in the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics (www.insight-centre.org) at the University of Galway.
About Insight:
The Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics is one of the largest research centre on data analytics. It brings together researchers from across Ireland to create a critical mass of more than 400 researchers from Ireland’s leading ICT clusters. Researchers at Insight carry out research on a new generation of data analytics technologies in a number of key application domain areas, such as Health and Human Performance, Smart Communities, Internet of Things, Enterprise and Services, Sustainability, and Operations.
Background:
With the increase in adoption of data spaces and data ecosystems, making personal and industrial data available for re-use is becoming a fundamental requirement. On one side, both centralized and decentralized platforms are being developed to facilitate secure exchange of data. On the other hand, a new generation of privacy preserving and secure computational algorithms and machine learning methods are being developed that federate over multiple sources of data. In both scenarios, the sharing of data, model, or computation can be seen as a transactional process that involves data holders, data users, and data intermediaries. The PhD studentship will explore the fundamental research on design and evaluation of computational approaches to incentive mechanisms for various objectives of data sharing in data ecosystems. The successful PhD candidate will carry out research at the intersection on data management, game theory, optimization and artificial intelligence. The candidate is expected to ground the work in current state-of-the-art in the algorithmic mechanism design, data markets, multi-agent systems, federated learning and multi-party computation research; and to come up with scientifically valid approaches and frameworks needed for fair and secure data sharing between organizations and individuals.
