Insight UCC researchers spent two days at the Cork Carnival of Science Festival, which ran over two days, the 7th and 8th of June. The researchers demonstrated some
principles of computer science in a way that is accessible and fun for primary school-aged children through the use of paper-based puzzles and
games in the spirit of the CS-Unplugged initiative.
Also, the fun coding game Cubetto was in great demand; this demonstrates the basic principles of coding in a fun and interactive way without the use of a computer. Turing Tumble was also shown and was popular with older children, this is a revolutionary new game where players (ages 8 to adult) build mechanical computers powered by marbles to
solve logic puzzles.
The story of Saérlaith, our bog princess was also brought to life again this year. She has stories to tell about her bog and all its enchantments. At the event, the public listened to Saérlaith whispering about sphagnum moss and its magical properties and calling out to us to listen to her and restore the boglands of Ireland while learning about miraculous mosses and their carbon capture in a fun and interactive and multi-sensory way.
