Dr. Erik (Pieter) de Jong graduated with an MSc in Global Health from Maastricht University (NLD) in 2016. Following a period in the pharmaceutical industry, he obtained his PhD in Global Health from National Taiwan University. His doctoral research employed large-scale data-driven epidemiological approaches to analyse occupational risks for bacterial infections and AMR. This research adopted a One Health perspective, investigating the associations between work environments and infection risks in occupational populations.
Erik joined the University of Galway in January 2026 as a Postdoctoral Researcher working on One Health and epidemiological surveillance. His work draws on his background in environmental epidemiology and data science to develop and tailor integrated surveillance tools within a comprehensive One Health framework.
