Insight's Paul Buitelaar was awarded the NUI Galway Research Excellence Prize yesterday. Buitelaar is a senior lecturer in NUI Galway and vice-director of Insight@NUIG. He leads Insight’s unit for Natural Language Processing. Huge congrats!

Insight's Prof Alan Smeaton and PhD student Caoilainn Doyle were interviewed for a segment about Irish research on brain computer interfaces (BCI) for RTE's Drivetime which was broadcast yesterday. Smeaton spoke about his work using BCIs to predict someone's likelihood of harming themselves, while Doyle explained how she uses BCIs in her research which attempts to assess and maybe ultimately improve the attention skills of children with dyslexia.

Insight EPE Manager Dr Aoibheann Bird is currently travelling around Europe on the Science Bus, demonstrating that citizen science is an accessible and fun way to explore the world around us.
The Science Bus forms part of a European project ‘Doing It Together Science’ in which 11 research institutions will collaborate with science galleries, museums and art institutions to host innovative workshops, exhibitions and activities to engage as many people as possible with citizen science.

Sea level rise is accelerating according to research conducted by Insight's Andrew Parnell. Some parts of the Southeastern US, like Florida, are seeing 'hotspots,' where water is rising six times faster than average. These were among the startling findings presented by Parnell at the JSM 2017 conference last week in Baltimore.

Insight's Professor Dermot Diamond was interviewed recently for an Enviro Influencers series which talks to people at the forefront of the disruptive technologies that are transforming environmental industries. In the interview Prof Diamond talks about the impact of the integration of environmental data with other big data sources, as well as the rise of the citizen scientist.

Insight's Prof Barry O'Sullivan continued in his campaign to encourage Ireland to increase its digital age of consent by talking to thejournal.ie. Last week, politicians agreed to set Ireland's digital age of consent (ie. the age at which children do not need parental consent in order to avail of internet services such as social media accounts) at 13. European law states that countries can set their own digital age of consent with a lower limit of 13 and an upper limit of 16.

Girls Hack Ireland was out in force on the final day of Inspirefest 2017, young and not-so-young sci-tech enthusiasts gathered at The Dock, Accenture’s creative new office space in Dublin’s Silicon Docks, for a free Family Fringe event. Insight EPE Manager Brendan Smith is in Beirut at the moment teaching advanced Scratch coding classes for Refugee Coding Week. This is just the latest trip for Smith who has been teaching coding in Tanzania already this year. He has travelled all over the world from Jordan to Rwanda and many places in between as part of an EPE collaboration with multinational software giant SAP.
