  • We introduce a new way to describe a large family of global constraints over time-series data. These constraints describe various features of the time series, like the number of peaks, or the steepest ascent, which together characterise the time-series. Those features often are linked to physical limits of the generator of the series, for example a power plant, or a data sensor.

  • Genetic Improvement (GI) is a form of Genetic Programming that improves an existing program. We use GI to evolve a faster version of a C++ program, a Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solver called MiniSAT, specialising it for a particular problem class, namely Combinatorial Interaction Testing (CIT), using automated code transplantation.

  • PCP-nets (Probabilistic CP-nets) generalize CP-nets to model conditional preferences with probabilistic uncertainty. PCP-nets can be used in a multi-agent context to compactly represent a collection of CP-nets, thus using probabilistic uncertainty to reconcile possibly conflicting qualitative preferences expressed by a group of agents.

  • This thesis encourages the use of the CFLP(FD) paradigm for tackling real-life Constraint Satisfaction and Optimization Problems. To do so it focuses on the system TOY(FD). The first part of the research improves the solving performance of TOY(FD) by interfacing the C++ CP(FD) solvers of Gecode and ILOG Solver, and by enhancing the language for a better specification of ad-hoc search strategies.

  • Some problems require solutions that “look random”, with no apparent patterns and perhaps passing statistical tests of randomness. The reason could be to avoid statistical bias, to avoid detection, or to behave unpredictably. Based on ideas from data compression and algorithmic information theory, we propose “entropy constraint” to allow only solutions with few or no discernible patterns.

  • The Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) is NP-Complete, even in the case where all constraints are binary. However, some classes of CSP instances are tractable. Recently, a new method for defining such classes has emerged. This approach is centered around forbidden patterns, or the local absence of some conditions.
