    The 2018 IEEE Computer Society PAMI Mark Everingham Prize has been awarded jointly to Alan Smeaton, Wessel Kraaij, Paul Over and George Awad for “the TRECVid Video Retrieval Evaluation 2003-2018 (datasets and workshops).” The Prize was presented at the biennial European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) in Munich, Germany, on 12th September 2018.

    Rob Argent, Louise Brennan & Dominic O’Connor won the Health Hack competition at Participatory Health Informatics, which was held in Seville, Spain, last week. Their winning entry was called BEAMS, based on an innovative balance monitoring system for MS patients.

  • Details of Award / Distinction
    Aaron Duane and Cathal Gurrin, in collaboration with Wolfgang Hurst (University of Utrecht) won the inaugural Lifelog Search Challenge at ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval 2018 (ICMR 2018) in Yokohama, Japan. The Lifelog Search Challenge is an interactive competition, founded by Cathal and Duc-Tien Dang-Nguyen in which research groups compete against each other in front of a live audience of conference attendees, to find the answers to eighteen challenging information needs from a large multimodal lifelog.

    Alan Smeaton, Cathal Gurrin, Jiang Zhou and Aaron Duane along with collaborators from University of Otago, Wellington, New Zealand and Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA were awarded the 2017 Best Publication award by the ISBNPA e- and m-Health SIG for their paper Children’s everyday exposure to food marketing: an objective analysis using wearable cameras (doi: 10.1186/s12966-017-0570-3).

    Minister of State for Training, Skills and Innovation, John Halligan TD, invested €13.7 million in funding for 22 early career researchers. The awards are funded through Science Foundation Ireland’s Career Development Award Programme, which supports Ireland’s research talent pipeline by funding excellent researchers still in the early stages of their scientific career. Two of this year’s awards are co-funded with Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland. The awards will contribute to the advancing research in areas such as energy, materials, environment, technology, and health.
