Insight's Professor Andrew Parnell is profiled in Silicon Republic this week. Parnell is deputy director of machine learning and statistics in Insight and Hamilton Professor in Maynooth University. Parnell has produced some extraordinary research which has given insights into sea level rise due to global warming and tsunami patterns in Indonesia to name just a few papers that came to global attention last year.

Insight@UCC Director, Professor Barry O'Sullivan has been appointed to the European High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI HLG). The AI HLG will support the implementation of the European strategy on AI. This will include the detailing of recommendations on future AI-related policy development and on ethical, legal and societal issues related to AI, including socio-economic challenges.

Dublin City University has teamed up with AIB to appoint Ireland’s first chair in data analytics, with Professor Tomas Ward taking up the role, Ciara O'Brien writes in today's Irish Times.
Based in DCU’s School of Computing, Prof Ward’s research will focus on how data analytics can support decision making in business, and give insight into customer behaviour.

Insight's Alison Keogh was a key contributor to RTE's two part documentary Stressed, which was presented by Jennifer O'Connell. Keogh's team in Insight@UCD devised a novel way of gathering smartphone user data via an app. Over 1,000 volunteers downloaded the How Are You Ireland? app and answered questions about their stress levels over a four week period. The results of the survey were presented in the documentary. You can catch up on it here.

Insight's Professor Alan Smeaton has written an interesting piece for RTE's Brainstorm explaining why internet searches have not changed or improved for the user in the past 25 years. In the piece Professor Smeaton writes, "Those of us who care about the quality of searching know that there are better ways to search the internet. Currently, there is no carry-over from one search to the next, even from the same person at the same time and on the same device.

Insight's Ciara Duignan spoke to Silicon republic's Claire O'Connell recently. In the article, which was published late last week, Duignan talks about her research which gathers data from GAA players and is then analysed in an effort to gain insights into how the players might improve their health and well being.
